Your Friendly Guide to an Unforgettable Caribbean Getaway

Trunk Bay - Voted the Most Beautiful beach in the World!

If you’re dreaming of turquoise waters, powdery white sand, and that warm island breeze, visiting the US Virgin Islands is the perfect escape. This Caribbean gem has all that and more — but before you slip into your flip-flops and sip your first rum punch, there are a few things to know that’ll make your trip even smoother, easier, and more fun. Think of this as some friendly advice from someone who lives here (and absolutely loves it!).

1. You’re in Paradise… Just Don’t Forget Your Shirt! 🩴👚

It’s tempting – you just left the beach, still salty from the sea, and want to grab a drink or lunch. But here's the thing: once you step off the sand, it’s time to cover up a bit.

Locals appreciate modesty, and many places actually have rules about wearing shoes and shirts (yes, even at beach bars). It's all about respect for the culture – and for the health codes. No need to get fancy, just toss on a shirt or a cover-up, and you’re good to go.

Bonus: You’ll blend right in like a seasoned traveler.

2. Start Every Chat With a Smile and a “Good Morning” ☀️😊

One of the best parts of island life? The people. Folks here are friendly, kind, and love a good greeting.

So whether you're ordering coffee or asking for directions, take a second to say “Good Morning,” “Good Afternoon,” or “Good Evening.” It’s not just good manners – it’s a part of daily life. It sets the tone and makes every interaction feel a little warmer (just like the weather).

3. Bring Some Cash – You’ll Need It 💵🌴

Trust us on this one: having cash on hand will make your life a lot easier.

Here’s where it really comes in handy:

  • Taxis (they're cash-only)

  • Small beach bars and food stands

  • Tips for your awesome boat captain or bartender

  • And during those occasional power outages (yep, they happen!)

Think of it like sunscreen – always smart to carry, and you’ll be glad you did.

4. Power Outages? It's a Thing (But Nothing to Stress About) 🔦⚡

The power grid on the islands can be a little… quirky. It’s not unusual for the power to go out for a bit, especially during peak season or bad weather.

Most of the time, it’s no big deal – just part of island life. A few simple tips can help:

  • Ask if your rental has a generator

  • Keep a jug of water handy (mid-shampoo blackouts are real!)

  • Have some cash ready in case credit card machines go down

  • Maybe toss a flashlight in your bag, just in case

It’s all part of the adventure, right?

5. Grocery Shopping = Island Scavenger Hunt 🛒😄

Grocery shopping here is a little different – most food gets shipped in, so stock can be limited and prices a bit higher than back home.

Our advice? Be flexible and treat it like a fun challenge. If they’re out of your go-to cereal, maybe try something different, bagels, pastries, eggs. If milk is out, almond or oat milk might be your new favorite – it’s all about going with the flow. Either way, you'll still get a delicious breakfast!

🌺 Last But Not Least: Relax, Respect, and Enjoy the Ride

The USVI are stunningly beautiful, incredibly welcoming, and full of unforgettable moments. From the friendly faces to the postcard views, this is a place that invites you to slow down and enjoy life a little more.

Just remember these five things:

✔️ Cover up when you're off the beach

✔️ Always say a polite greeting – it goes a long way

✔️ Keep some cash in your wallet

✔️ Don’t sweat a power outage

✔️ Embrace the island grocery game

Now you’re ready to soak it all in – sun, sand, and smiles included.

See you in Love City! 🏝️💛

All good thing to know! Especially like the tip about greeting the locals! We are guests when on St John and so very important to be grateful for the time you get to spend on island. You can see the person “ light up “ with a smile by just offering a few kind words!
