Unlike fish or sea turtles, sea fans can't simply swim to a better location. Once they settle onto the reef as tiny larvae, they're attached for life. That means their shape and orientation have to make the most of the conditions where they grow.

Sea Fans Are Octocorals

Although they may look like underwater plants, sea fans are actually colonies of thousands of tiny animals called polyps. Each polyp has eight feathery tentacles, which is why sea fans belong to a group known as octocorals ("octo" means eight).

Rather than resisting the current, sea fans have evolved to use it as a constant source of food and fresh water.

Built for Life on a Caribbean Reef
