Staghorn and Elkhorn Coral in the U.S. Virgin Islands: Why These Reef Builders Matter

Imagine snorkeling in the clear waters of the U.S. Virgin Islands and spotting the unmistakable branching shape of an elkhorn or staghorn coral colony below. While these corals were once among the dominant reef builders throughout the Caribbean, today healthy colonies are much harder to find. Seeing one has become a reminder of both the beauty of our reefs and why protecting them matters.


Staghorn and elkhorn coral in the U.S. Virgin Islands are more than just beautiful marine life. They provide habitat for countless reef animals, help protect our coastlines from wave energy, and are an important part of the reef ecosystems that make the Virgin Islands unique. Unfortunately, these iconic corals have experienced dramatic declines over the past several decades, with recent marine heat waves accelerating their loss across much of the Caribbean.


The good news is that dedicated scientists, volunteers, conservation organizations, and responsible visitors are working together to help protect what remains and restore these remarkable reef builders wherever possible.


Staghorn and Elkhorn Coral in the U.S. Virgin Islands: What Makes Them So Special?

Although they look like colorful rocks or underwater plants, corals are actually living animals. Each colony is made up of thousands of tiny animals called polyps, which work together to build the limestone skeleton that forms the foundation of a coral reef.


Two of the Caribbean's most recognizable reef builders are staghorn coral (Acropora cervicornis) and elkhorn coral (Acropora palmata).


Appropriately named, staghorn coral grows into slender branches that look like deer ("stag") antlers that provide excellent habitat for juvenile fish and other reef creatures. Elkhorn coral forms broader, flattened branches that look like elk antlers and is commonly found in shallow water where it helps absorb wave energy before it reaches shore.


Historically, these fast-growing corals dominated many shallow Caribbean reefs. Today, large healthy stands are much less common due to decades of hurricanes, disease, coral bleaching, and rising ocean temperatures.


Both species are listed as Critically Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and are protected as Threatened under the U.S. Endangered Species Act.

Why Are These Corals So Important?

It's easy to appreciate corals because they're beautiful, but their true importance goes far beyond appearance.


They Build Reef Habitat

Staghorn and elkhorn corals are often called reef-building corals because they create the three-dimensional structure that so many other species depend on. Their branching skeletons provide hiding places, feeding areas, and nursery habitat for countless reef animals.


They Support Marine Biodiversity

Although coral reefs cover less than 1% of the ocean floor, scientists estimate that nearly 25% of all marine species spend at least part of their lives in or around coral reefs. Staghorn and elkhorn corals add important three-dimensional structure to these reefs, creating shelter and nursery habitat for many fish and invertebrates. As these branching corals decline, so does the habitat that many reef species depend on.

They Help Protect Shorelines

Healthy reefs naturally reduce wave energy before it reaches shore, helping protect beaches and coastlines from erosion while reducing some of the impacts of storms.


They Support Local Communities

Healthy reefs contribute to recreational fishing, scientific research, and sustainable tourism. While the reefs around the Virgin Islands have changed dramatically over the past few decades, they remain an important natural resource worth protecting.


What Is Coral Bleaching?

One of the greatest threats facing Caribbean reefs today is coral bleaching.


Corals live in partnership with microscopic algae called zooxanthellae, which live inside their tissues. These algae provide most of the coral's food through photosynthesis while also giving corals their color.


When ocean temperatures remain too warm for too long, corals become stressed and expel these algae.


Without them, corals lose their color and may eventually appear bright white—a process known as bleaching.


A bleached coral is not necessarily dead. If water temperatures return to normal soon enough, the algae can return and the coral may recover. But prolonged heat stress weakens corals and can eventually kill them, in the meantime making them more vulnerable to disease or other stressors.


If you've snorkeled around St. John in recent years, you've probably noticed that many reefs don't look the way they once did. A widespread Caribbean bleaching event in 2023, followed by an even hotter 2024, affected reefs throughout the U.S. Virgin Islands. While some corals recovered, many did not, and the effects remain visible today.

The Biggest Threats Facing Virgin Islands Coral Reefs

Rising Ocean Temperatures

By far the greatest threat to staghorn and elkhorn coral is warming ocean temperatures. As marine heat waves become more frequent and intense, recovery becomes increasingly difficult.


Hurricanes

Hurricanes have always been part of life in the Caribbean. Powerful waves can break branching corals into pieces, move sediment across reefs, and damage coral colonies.


Fortunately, not every broken fragment is lost. Healthy pieces can sometimes survive, reattach naturally, or be rescued through coral restoration efforts.


Low-intensity storms can actually be beneficial for reefs, lowering temperatures from wind and rain that can relieve thermal stress during the hottest time of year.


Coral Disease

Another significant challenge has been Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease (SCTLD), which has devastated many Caribbean coral species since it first appeared in the region.


While staghorn and elkhorn coral are not susceptible to SCTLD they are vulnerable to other diseases such as White Band Disease and White Pox. Unfortunately, many neighboring coral species have experienced severe losses, changing the composition of reefs throughout the Virgin Islands.


Careless Human Activity

While climate change is the largest threat, small individual actions still matter.


Standing on coral crushes living tissue that may have taken decades to grow. Accidentally kicking coral with fins can break fragile branches, and touching coral removes its protective mucus layer.

Fortunately, much of St. John's most popular snorkeling coastline is protected with permanent mooring balls. Instead of dropping anchors onto fragile reefs, boats tie to these mooring balls, allowing hundreds of vessels to safely visit popular snorkeling sites each year without anchor damage to the reef below.


How C.O.R.E. Is Helping Restore Coral Reefs

While restoration alone cannot solve the challenges facing Caribbean reefs, it plays an important role in protecting and rebuilding local coral populations.


The Caribbean Oceanic Restoration and Education (C.O.R.E.) Foundation operates an underwater coral nursery in Leinster Bay, St. John, within Virgin Islands National Park.

C.O.R.E.'s underwater nursery gives rescued coral fragments a chance to grow before they're transplanted back onto local reefs.

C.O.R.E.'s scuba team salvages naturally broken fragments of elkhorn and staghorn coral, secures them in the nursery, and cares for them weekly. Once the corals have grown large enough, they're out-planted onto reefs where these important species have declined, helping restore habitat and preserve the genetic diversity of local coral populations.


Coral restoration isn't a silver bullet. The scale of coral loss throughout the Caribbean is enormous. But every healthy colony grown in a nursery represents another opportunity to strengthen local reefs and give these remarkable species a better chance for the future.

In addition to coral restoration, C.O.R.E. also assists with monitoring and treating Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease (SCTLD) on susceptible coral species. Divers apply antibiotic treatment paste to infected colonies in an effort to slow or stop the disease from spreading across the reef. While staghorn and elkhorn coral are not among the species affected by SCTLD, protecting the broader reef community helps maintain healthier ecosystems for all coral species.

Leave Coral Where It Belongs

Never collect coral from the reef, whether it's alive or dead.


It's also best not to purchase coral souvenirs. In some parts of the world, coral reefs are illegally broken apart—or even blasted with explosives—to create decorative pieces for the tourist trade. A small piece of coral on a shelf may represent hundreds of years of reef growth destroyed in a matter of moments.


The best souvenir is a photograph and the memory of seeing a living reef in its natural home.


Support Reef Conservation

Organizations like C.O.R.E. depend on volunteers, community support, and donations to continue restoring coral reefs around St. John.
